Bitcoin's Lightning Network receives first quantum-proof defense from East Texas A&M University

Quantum computers can't break Bitcoin today. But a team at East Texas A&M University isn't waiting around to find out what happens when they can.

Researchers from the university's RELLIS Campus published PQLN, short for Post-Quantum Lightning Network, on September 12, 2026. It's the first working implementation that bolts quantum-resistant cryptography onto Bitcoin's primary layer-2 scaling network, and the full codebase, nearly 11,000 lines added to a fork of rust-lightning, is already live on GitHub.

The Lightning Network lets Bitcoin users transact off-chain, meaning they can send payments back and forth without waiting for every single one to settle on the base blockchain. That speed comes with a tradeoff: Lightning relies on the same elliptic curve cryptography (specifically secp256k1) that secures Bitcoin itself. If a sufficiently powerful quantum computer ever cracks that math, both layers would be exposed.

PQLN doesn't rip out the existing cryptography. Instead, it layers lattice-based algorithms on top of it. The two lattice-based tools in the kit are ML-DSA for digital signatures and ML-KEM for key exchange. Both are drawn from the family of algorithms that the US National Institute of Standards and Technology has been standardizing for exactly this scenario.
