Crypto Agility: Digital Trust Is Becoming a Full-Time Job

Shrinking Certificates, ACME, mTLS and PQC Redefine Enterprise Security Posture Amod Puranik • September 15, 2026

A federal agent shows up at a rancher's gate.
"I'm here to inspect your land for illegal drugs."
The rancher says, "Fine, go ahead" … but warns him to stay out of one particular field.
The agent flashes his badge.
"This badge means I can go anywhere I want. No questions asked."
A few minutes later, the agent is sprinting for the fence, chased by the rancher's enormous, furious bull.
The rancher yells from the top rail: "Show him your badge! Show him your badge!"

For a long time, that's roughly how organizations have treated digital certificates. The badge was assumed to carry its own authority. Issue it, install it, forget it. Nothing in the field was going to charge at you before the renewal reminder fired 30 days out.

That assumption is now obsolete. For decades, transport layer security certificates were the industry's ultimate "set and forget" control. Today, an expired or mismanaged certificate is one of the single most likely causes of a catastrophic, self-inflicted outage - the kind that takes down a bank's mobile app or a hospital's patient portal not because anyone attacked it, but because nobody was watching the expiration date.
