Mert Mumtaz, chief executive of Solana-focused infrastructure provider Helius, and Charles Guillemet, chief technology officer at hardware wallet maker Ledger, both took to X this week to challenge claims circulating in security circles that AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs pose an imminent threat to the digital asset's core security model.
The debate intensified after security researchers suggested AI could accelerate the discovery of weaknesses in the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin wallets and validates transactions. At the center of the discussion is ECDSA, the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm, which proves that a transaction was authorized by the holder of the corresponding private key.
Guillemet, who oversees technology at one of the largest cryptocurrency storage companies, acknowledged that advances in AI-assisted mathematics merit close attention. However, he stressed that a theoretical result is fundamentally different from a deployable attack against Bitcoin's signature scheme.
