Almost everything went up in August. After months in which gains stayed locked inside a handful of coins and short-lived narratives, participation finally widened, and 70 of the 84 non-stablecoin assets in the current top 100 closed the month higher. That is a share of 83%, the widest of the year.

June had run the other way, with 87% of those same assets falling and only 13% closing higher. That eight-week flip is the real story of the month. Aggregate market value can climb on Bitcoin and a few liquid large caps while everything else stands still, so a rising total says little on its own. Once most of the market moves together, money is reaching past the majors and into smaller, riskier names.
August still falls short of a classic altseason. Top-100 altcoin capitalization gained 26.5% against Bitcoin’s 24.5%, while the median altcoin returned just 17%, well behind BTC. The aggregate number therefore belongs to the strongest large and mid caps, and the field as a whole lagged. The Altseason Index finished the month below 40 out of 100 and Bitcoin dominance remained elevated. Leadership did not pass from Bitcoin to altcoins. The market simply widened, from a narrow Bitcoin trade into a broader risk-on regime.
