Japanese IT services giant Fujitsu Limited (TSE: 6702) and cold-atom hardware developer Yaqumo Inc. have initiated experimental hardware verification of quantum computing architectures and operational software layers on physical neutral-atom quantum processors. Building on theoretical compatibility studies launched in April 2026, the joint R&D team began executing live circuit benchmarks in August 2026 to accelerate early Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (Early-FTQC) platform deployments.

The technical evaluation integrates Fujitsu’s proprietary STAR (Space-Time efficient Analog Rotation) architecture onto Yaqumo’s neutral-atom processor roadmap. Originally engineered to suppress physical qubit overhead in superconducting architectures, the STAR framework minimizes the spatial footprint required for arbitrary-angle phase rotation gates. By leveraging the optical trapping and all-to-all qubit connectivity native to neutral-atom arrays—where ytterbium (Yb) atoms are dynamically manipulated using optical tweezers—the collaboration seeks to evaluate whether STAR compilation can drive higher-fidelity quantum error correction (QEC) with significantly reduced physical qubit counts.

• Unified Device Calibration & Monitoring• Target: Hundreds of Qubits + QEC (FY2027)• Early-FTQC Hardware & Algorithmic Benchmarks

Concurrently, the team is adapting Fujitsu’s open-source middleware, the Open Quantum Toolchain for OPerators and Users, to interface directly with Yaqumo’s control infrastructure. This software stack handles low-level command translation, job queue scheduling, device status monitoring, and pulse calibration for neutral-atom systems. By establishing a unified cloud control interface, the integration enables external enterprise users to execute quantum algorithms across diverse hardware modalities without modifying high-level circuit specifications.
