The Japanese Yen advanced against the US Dollar on Tuesday, driven by growing market expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will raise interest rates again, while the US Dollar remained subdued amid mixed economic signals and shifting Federal Reserve policy expectations.
BoJ Rate Hike Bets Fuel Yen Demand
Investors have increasingly priced in another BoJ rate hike in the coming months, following recent comments from central bank officials and stronger-than-expected inflation data in Japan. As of the latest trading session, the yen gained ground against the dollar, with USD/JPY trading lower.
The BoJ has been gradually normalizing monetary policy after years of ultra-loose settings. Market participants now see a meaningful chance of a rate increase at the next policy meeting, which would narrow the interest rate differential between Japan and the US, making the yen more attractive.
US Dollar Lacks Momentum
On the other side, the US Dollar Index (DXY) struggled to find direction, hovering near recent lows. The greenback faced pressure from a softer US labor market and cooling inflation, which have reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve may begin cutting interest rates later this year.
