In brief

  • MetaMask has launched Agent Wallet, a self-custodial wallet designed for AI-powered crypto trading.
  • Users can set spending limits, allowlist protocols, and choose security settings before agents execute transactions.
  • The wallet includes transaction simulation, threat scanning, MEV protection, and gas abstraction for supported transactions.

MetaMask on Thursday launched Agent Wallet, a self-custodial wallet that lets AI agents execute on-chain transactions within user-defined restrictions, expanding the company's push into AI-powered crypto trading.

According to MetaMask, the wallet is aimed at traders and developers using AI agents to monitor markets, identify opportunities, and execute transactions autonomously.

However, rather than giving an AI agent unrestricted access to a wallet, users can set spending caps, approve specific protocols, choose risk settings, and select between "Guard Mode" and "Beast Mode," which offer different levels of automation. (Disclosure: MetaMask is a product of Consensys, one of numerous investors in an editorially independent Decrypt.)

Agent Wallet supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode, along with Hyperliquid and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks. It also supports gas abstraction, allowing users to pay network fees with the asset being transferred instead of holding a network's native token.

“Never worry about paying for gas,” the company wrote. “Agents can transfer and swap without holding a chain's native token for gas; MetaMask settles the network fee in the token being moved.”

The launch follows MetaMask's June rollout of Agent Wallet to about 200 early access users. It comes as crypto companies compete to build infrastructure for AI agents that can manage portfolios, execute trades, and interact with decentralized applications. Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets in February, while MoonPay expanded its AI agent strategy in March, before expanding its MoonAgents platform to Telegram in July.

MetaMask said Agent Wallet reduces security risks by enforcing wallet-level permissions instead of trusting AI agents to act safely. According to MetaMask, supported transactions pass through transaction simulation, threat scanning, and smart transactions MEV protection.

The company also offers Transaction Protection coverage of up to $10,000 per month for eligible transactions that pass its security checks but still result in losses.

“This security-first model is why Agent Wallet is built around rules, not blind delegation,” MetaMask said. “The agent can act, but it acts inside the user's boundaries.”
