OpenAI says an unreleased internal model has resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems spanning most branches of mathematics, and it did so in roughly 24 days of training. The company disclosed the claim on September 21, 2026, less than two weeks after a separate announcement that one of its systems had produced a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a nearly 90-year-old question that sits among the seven Millennium Prize Problems tracked by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Outlets including OfficeChai, India Today, Business Standard and The Daily Star picked up the story within hours, and it quickly became the top-trending item in AI news circles.

The claim is significant not because OpenAI solved one hard problem, but because it says its system solved dozens of them back to back, at a pace the company itself reportedly found surprising. It is also, so far, unverified by anyone outside OpenAI. No public list of the 100-plus problems has been released, no proofs have been published for external review, and OpenAI has not defined what counts as a “resolved” problem for the purposes of the tally. That gap between the scale of the claim and the amount of evidence available to check it is the real story developing this week, and it is why mathematicians, AI researchers and enterprise software buyers are all watching the same announcement for very different reasons.
