Quantum computing firm Quantinuum has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia's Aramco, the world's largest integrated energy and chemicals company, to explore industrial applications of the technology and lay groundwork for potential research collaboration on fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The agreement, announced Wednesday from Riyadh, establishes a framework for the two organizations to conduct preliminary technical onboarding and exchange expertise. They will work together to identify Aramco challenges that could benefit from quantum computing research, with particular focus on complex problems in the energy sector and digital transformation initiatives.

The partnership also aims to benchmark different quantum computing modalities and evaluate whether future generations of quantum systems could address relevant scientific and industrial challenges facing the energy industry.

Rajeeb Hazra, president and chief executive officer of Quantinuum, framed the agreement as a necessary first step for organizations looking to capitalize on emerging quantum capabilities. "Organisations that expect to benefit from quantum computing need to begin developing their expertise, algorithms and workflows today," he said.
