Strategy Faces Potential Removal from MSCI Index Under Proposed Rules Targeting Non-Operating Companies

Bitcoin News reported that MSCI has proposed new rules targeting "non-operating companies." According to a simulation conducted by MSCI in May 2026, Strategy would be removed from its global investable market indices. Strategy, along with Metaplanet and Yellow Cake, are the three companies flagged for removal in the MSCI ACWI IMI simulation. The proposed methodology would screen companies based on their operating assets, expenses and cash flows, changes in non-operating fair value, and the degree of reliance on accumulated assets from fundraising. The final criterion directly implicates Strategy's model of accumulating Bitcoin through stock and debt issuance. The rules have not yet been finalized; the comment period ends on September 30, with MSCI expected to make a decision by October 16. Any related changes could be implemented during the November 2026 index review.
