Open interest in altcoin perpetual futures moved above Bitcoin’s (CRYPTO:BTC) on September 6, the first time that has happened since December 2024. Bitcoin’s perpetual open interest reached about $23.9 billion that day, around 37% of the combined total. Meanwhile, the rest of the market, led by Zcash, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL), and XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), carried roughly $40 billion in open contracts.

The last time this crossover happened, several mid-cap altcoins corrected sharply within weeks. Does this current shift show demand building in altcoins, or have traders simply piled on leverage ahead of a market that cannot support it?

Why Has Altcoin Open Interest Surpassed Bitcoin?

Altcoin perpetual futures open interest passed Bitcoin’s on September 6, 2026, for the first time since December 2024, with Zcash driving most of the shift. ZEC’s open interest climbed to a record $2.4 billion in early September as the Zcash price surged 134% over 30 days, briefly touching $1,023 on September 4 after a single-day jump of about 20%.
