Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing faster than our laws can keep up—and Congress is failing the American people by letting it happen.

Big technology companies are racing to deploy increasingly powerful AI systems with far too little oversight, too few safeguards, and almost no accountability when things go wrong. AI is already being used to undermine privacy, spread misinformation, replace workers, exploit consumers, and make consequential decisions about people’s lives.

Yet instead of putting meaningful guardrails in place, Republicans and the President are too eager to let the tech industry to write its own rules and police itself. Americans should not have to choose between technological progress and their privacy, jobs, civil rights, or safety. Congress must stop treating AI regulation as optional and hold the companies developing these systems accountable. Innovation and remaining competitive at the global stage cannot come at the expense of the American people. In fact, the U.S. and China should consider a treaty to slow down the AI race before it's too late.

 It is time for Congress to put people before profits and establish strong, smart, enforceable rules without sacrificing our ability to be a global leader in AI.
