Bitcoin fell sharply on Friday after the August nonfarm payrolls report demolished expectations, with the U.S. economy adding 162,000 jobs against a consensus of roughly 53,000 to 56,000 — confirming that the labor market is considerably stronger than markets had priced in. The blowout data strengthened the case for a Federal Reserve rate hike at its September 15–16 policy meeting, September hike odds surged to 59% immediately after the release, sending Treasury yields higher and pushing Bitcoin — which had been trading above $81,000 before the report — down to roughly $79,654 in one sharp five-minute candle before partially recovering. The Bureau of Labor Statistics August report served as the catalyst for a swift market repricing across Treasury bonds, the U.S. dollar, and risk assets.

The reaction underscored that despite Bitcoin's extraordinary August performance — a 25% monthly gain, its best month since November 2024 — the asset remains tightly coupled to monetary policy expectations. Strong economic data, in an environment where the Fed is still fighting inflation above its 2% target, is not good news for Bitcoin. It is pressure.

A Tale of Two Jobs Reports

The contrast with the prior month's report is stark. When July payrolls were originally reported as a decline of 23,000 jobs — well below the roughly 80,000 that had been expected — Bitcoin briefly cleared $65,000 in early August, as traders interpreted the labor-market weakness as reducing the likelihood of further tightening. The classic "bad news is good news" dynamic — softer data meant fewer rate hikes, and fewer hikes meant a weaker dollar and more oxygen for risk assets — was operating in full.
