Understanding Bitcoin's Recent 4.5 Percentage Point Move

Bitcoin’s roughly 4.5 percentage point move over the last ~18 hours is best explained by a combination of renewed spot ETF inflows, supportive macro news (especially from Japan’s central bank), and generally risk‑on crypto market conditions.

Key Drivers of the Move

1. ETF Inflows Reversed Prior Outflows

A clear, asset‑specific driver was the sharp improvement in US spot Bitcoin ETF flows. On 17 September, US spot BTC ETFs saw net inflows of about $159.5M, after two prior days of large net outflows of roughly $746M combined. BlackRock’s IBIT alone took in around $183.7M, while some other products (Fidelity, VanEck) still saw moderate redemptions, netting to the +$159.5M figure overall. These numbers have been repeated across multiple sources on X and in news coverage of ETF flows for that date.

At the same time, spot ETH ETFs reportedly had net outflows near $39M, implying that marginal demand was tilting specifically toward BTC rather than crypto broadly.

Why this matters for the 4.5 point move:

  1. Inflows of that size are meaningful relative to recent daily ETF flows and follow two days of heavy selling. The shift from almost −$300M per day to +$160M reduces immediate supply overhang.
  2. The timing lines up with the price grind higher from the mid‑$76,000s toward and above $77,000–$78,000 during the last 18–24 hours.
  3. Flow commentary and order‑book analysis on X also pointed to solid spot buying on major exchanges like Binance over the last 24 hours, with Binance showing tens of millions of dollars in net spot BTC buys, while Coinbase showed net selling. That pattern is consistent with ETF‑linked and Asia/Europe‑linked demand being stronger than US retail spot.
