BlackRock moved roughly $1 billion worth of crypto in just 48 hours, scooping up 11,098 Bitcoin and 132,769 Ethereum according to on-chain data tracked by Arkham Intelligence. The figures are eye-catching, but the mechanism behind them matters more than the number itself.

These purchases flow through BlackRock’s spot ETF products, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA), meaning they’re driven by investor demand for ETF shares rather than some boardroom decision to load up on crypto. When investors buy shares of IBIT or ETHA, the fund needs to acquire the underlying assets to back those shares. That’s what happened here.

How the ETF plumbing actually works

BlackRock isn’t placing speculative bets on token prices. It’s fulfilling its obligation as an ETF issuer to match share creation with actual asset purchases.

BlackRock’s ETF operations have been consistently active throughout 2026. In July, IBIT alone reported $183 million in inflows from client purchases of Bitcoin exposure. On the Ethereum side, in June 2026, the firm sold 3,671 BTC worth approximately $230 million while simultaneously purchasing 10,566 ETH valued at around $17.7 million, part of what appeared to be a rebalancing strategy tied to ETF redemption and creation flows.
