Crypto took a sharp step back on Wednesday as forced selling rippled through trading venues and cooled risk appetite. Bitcoin dropped as much as 3.3% to $82,759, Ether slid 5.9% to $2,540, and smaller names followed, with XRP and Solana each falling more than 4.5%. Losses hit related equities as well: Coinbase Global Inc. fell as much as 4.4%, while Strategy Inc. declined 6.8%.
Why it unraveled
The pullback sped up as leveraged wagers were unwound. About $720 million in crypto positions were liquidated over the past day, per Coinglass, and most of that clearing out hit long positions. The broader mood didn't help: reports of fresh Iranian offensives in the Strait of Hormuz weighed on sentiment, undercutting hopes for a quick restoration of shipping through the key corridor and sending Brent crude above $100 a barrel.

What pros are saying
LVRG Research's chief analyst, Dan Khus, said, "The dip in crypto prices serves as a leverage flush instead of a downward trend, stemming from crowded bets on higher prices being forced out, with most of the liquidations coming from long positions."
