The latest rally occurred after Helium announced on August 28 that the city of Celina in Texas was connecting its existing municipal Wi-Fi to Helium’s network to offload cellular traffic.

This has brought back attention to why is HNT going up and the huge price increase. The price went from around $0.25 on August 28 to over $0.70 during the so-called price explosion. HNT prices have remained very volatile in the meantime.

HNT Price Surges on Helium’s Texas Expansion

Part of the recent HNT price rally was attributed to Helium’s launch of carrier-grade service in Celina, Texas. Helium network is using Wi-Fi infrastructure inside public buildings and businesses participating in downtown. According to Helium, supported smartphones automatically get connected over the network without needing to download an application or change any settings.

The announcement marks another example of Helium crypto in use, as opposed to a purely theoretical use case. Celina is not the first case of a city municipality using Helium’s network: according to Helium, other municipalities include Redondo Beach, New Orleans, and Sausalito, all of which have likewise plugged coverage gaps.
