House Republicans are reportedly discussing removing tax provisions related to mining and staking from a digital assets tax bill. Ahead of the bill's scheduled review this Wednesday, Republican members of the House Ways and Means Committee are weighing whether to strip the provisions, according to reports.

Cointelegraph reported the news on the 14th, citing Punchbowl News. The tax bill was originally expected to include language clarifying the timing and method of taxation for digital assets newly acquired through mining or staking. If the provisions are removed, the tax treatment of newly issued or reward-based cryptocurrency would fall under existing statutes and IRS guidance.

However, nothing has been finalized. According to CoinMarketCap, the discussion remains at the consideration stage and has not resulted in a full committee decision or a House floor vote. The bill's name, specific provision language, sponsor list, and the rationale behind the proposed removal have not been disclosed. The Ways and Means Committee has a markup on crypto tax rules scheduled for the 16th, where the concrete direction may emerge.

The move aligns with long-standing demands from the cryptocurrency industry. Regarding the timing of taxation on new assets generated through mining and staking, industry participants have argued that the discrepancy between "when rewards accrue" and "when assets are actually sold for cash" imposes an excessive burden on taxpayers. Staking rewards, in particular, have drawn criticism for creating a structure where taxes are levied before assets are even disposed of.
