A new lawsuit claims Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google made an illegal deal to slow the pace of their respective AI development.

The lawsuit, which was filed on September 18 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, argues that the leading AI companies violated antitrust laws when they agreed to coordinate slowdown efforts, and that doing so would reduce the value consumers get for paid AI subscriptions.

At the center of the case is the question of whether public agreement over the pace of AI development amounted to coordination among competitors rather than independent decisions by individual companies.

The plaintiffs contend that consumers pay for increasingly capable AI services and could receive less value if the companies producing the leading systems collectively restrain how quickly those products improve.

That argument places the companies’ safety concerns in direct tension with competition law. AI developers have increasingly discussed common safeguards and shared standards as their systems become more capable, but the lawsuit argues that competitors cannot privately coordinate limits on development in ways that reduce competitive pressure.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei himself acknowledged the potential antitrust issue when he suggested that the federal government could authorize narrowly defined safety discussions among AI labs.
