A new debate surfacing this week after the potential dangers of artificial intelligence made headlines questions whether AI companies should slow down.

The risks being discussed with AI include scenarios ranging from robots hacking into companies to the technology threatening the very existence of humanity.

Some tech experts are saying a pause might be a good idea.

"Maybe recalibrating a little bit might make sense," said Neil Chilson, head of AI Policy at the Abundance Institute.

Chilson, former chief technologist at the FTC, said security should be built in every step of the way if AI is to be sold as a consumer product or an investment.

"I think it makes perfect sense to say our framework before was about releases," Chilson said. "Now we also need to look at development and are we getting the security balance right here?"

On the other side of the pause debate is President Donald Trump.

"We're leading China in AI," Trump recently said. "We're the most sophisticated country in the world. Frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins."

But even those who agree competition is good said it is better with safety built in.

"Safety is the right word for this," said Yashas Hariprasad, an assistant professor of computer science at California State University, East Bay. "We want to make sure we win the AI race, and I totally agree with the president when he says we should win the AI race when in comparison with any other country we're talking about, but winning here comes with security."

A report from Anthropic includes snippets of the malicious code and AI prompts it found, and urges governments and AI competitors to identify and prevent similar abuse. Scott Budman reports.
