MSTR Has Purchased 25 Times As Much It Sold

Strategy sold more than 1,600 Bitcoin for over $108 million at an average price of roughly $64,200, marking its second consecutive week of BTC sales and seventh straight week without a purchase.

However, the company has bought about 25 times as much Bitcoin as it has sold during the period.

“We’ll get back to buying more Bitcoin throughout the course of the year,” Strategy CEO Phong Le said in a FOX Business interview on Aug. 10.

The decision isn’t primarily driven by Bitcoin’s price, according to the CEO.

Instead, Strategy has focused on expanding its dollar reserves, which Le said have climbed from around $800 million to $4.75 billion over the past few months.

Decisions around Bitcoin sales are made jointly, with Le saying he and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor speak three to four times per day and consult with Strategy’s finance team and shareholders.

Why Is Strategy Increasing Cash Reserves?

In a CoinDesk interview on Aug. 10, Le said the company expects to continue outperforming Bitcoin by increasing the amount of BTC represented by each MSTR share, describing Strategy as an "amplified Bitcoin" play.

He noted that Bitcoin has gained about 33% over the past year compared with Strategy’s roughly 42% increase.

Addressing Strategy’s use of artificial intelligence, Le said AI did not invent its preferred-stock products but accelerated their development by helping the company work through legal, accounting and financial structuring questions.

He argued that AI allowed Strategy to explore possibilities more rapidly than relying exclusively on traditional bankers, lawyers and accountants.

Le also highlighted a major lesson from 2026 which is institutional and preferred-stock investors do not treat liquid Bitcoin as equivalent to cash.

That realization led Strategy to increase its cash reserves providing roughly 2.7 years of dividend coverage.

While Le said he might personally prefer holding Bitcoin, the larger cash buffer strengthens Strategy’s digital credit products and, ultimately, its Bitcoin strategy.
