The Quantum Genesis Q Competition is seeking proposals from private-sector companies to build and deploy scientifically relevant quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits capable of performing hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations. From fragile qubits to useful quantum computers
Today’s quantum computers are built from physical qubits that are highly susceptible to errors caused by noise and imperfections. Fault-tolerant quantum computing aims to overcome this problem by encoding information across multiple physical qubits to create more reliable logical qubits, along with error-correction techniques that allow calculations to continue despite individual errors.
That distinction makes the DOE’s target significant. Rather than simply counting the number of physical qubits in a machine, the competition focuses on systems capable of demonstrating useful computation with at least 100 logical qubits.
