LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Should artificial intelligence have a place in the classroom? That's the question the Los Angeles Unified School District is taking up, just months after the district voted to limit screen time for students.

Currently, some students in the district are allowed to use AI. Students 13 and older can use district-approved AI tools at the teacher's discretion. But first, they have to complete a lesson on responsible AI use.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, a new school board committee dedicated entirely to generative AI will meet for the first time to take a look at those rules.

District leaders are expected to give a presentation about AI in education. In that presentation, LAUSD says one of the questions it still needs to answer is at what age or grade AI should be introduced to students.

The district is also asking how it will know whether AI is actually improving teaching and learning, and what families should know about how their kids are using it.

Some parents want a full ban until more research is done.

"I feel like the kids are on screen time way too much and... they're not interacting with other kids like we used to growing up," said parent Anthony Engeron.

Summer break ended for Los Angeles USD students on Wednesday, with new limits on screen time and the use of digital devices for elementary students.
