Wintermute has received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to trade stocks, according to a report originally published by Crypto News. The development would expand the crypto-focused market maker’s ability to operate in traditional securities markets alongside its existing digital-asset business.
The approval places Wintermute within the broker-dealer framework used for firms that facilitate securities transactions. Broker-dealers are subject to U.S. securities rules designed to govern activities such as trading, customer protections, recordkeeping and market conduct.
The move highlights a broader convergence between crypto market infrastructure and conventional finance. Crypto market makers have played a central role in providing liquidity for digital assets, and broker-dealer permissions can give such firms a path to participate more directly in regulated equity markets. The report describes this shift as crypto market makers increasingly becoming broker-dealers.
