Nikhef Maastricht researchers have successfully used quantum computers to reconstruct particle tracks within data from the LHCb detector at CERN. The team, led by PhD candidate Xenofon Chiotopoulos and colleagues, performed the track reconstruction on two separate quantum computers, demonstrating the algorithm’s portability, LHCb says. While results are comparable to conventional methods, the experiment, published in Communication Physics, explores a different computational approach to particle tracking; the researchers write that their conclusion is the algorithm works. This work marks a step toward applying quantum computing to real-world high-energy physics challenges, moving beyond simulations.

Quantum Algorithm Identifies LHCb Particle Tracks

A quantum algorithm successfully identified particle tracks originating from proton collisions within the LHCb detector, demonstrating a potential new approach to high-energy physics data analysis. Nikhef Maastricht researchers performed track reconstruction, correlating sensor signals to reveal collision traces, using quantum computers, a process traditionally completed with step-by-step classical methods. Classical track reconstruction begins with an initial signal and searches for related signals, while the quantum approach aims to compute all possible relationships simultaneously, then filter for the most likely outcomes.
