Bitcoin edged down on Monday, dipping below the $78,000 mark as markets weighed recent signals of a more aggressive Federal Reserve stance and renewed military conflict between the U.S. and Iran. The flagship cryptocurrency briefly touched an intraday low near $77,400 before steadying.
Despite Monday's pullback, Bitcoin is poised to close August with nearly a 24% gain, capitalizing on a strong bounce earlier in the month that saw speculative assets surge on easing bond yields. That rally, however, could face headwinds as hawkish tones from Fed leaders spark rising bets on interest rate hikes.
Kevin Warsh, a member of the Federal Reserve Board, speaking at the Jackson Hole symposium last Friday, emphasized the central bank's commitment to its 2% inflation goal. While avoiding direct commentary on rate moves, his remarks stoked expectations for an increase as soon as September.
Market pricing through the CME Group's FedWatch Tool now implies a 60% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike next month. These growing odds contrast with crypto's recent surge, which had largely been fueled by declining Treasury yields following U.S. Treasury bond market interventions.
