Bitcoin researchers have proposed adding Zcash-style shielded transactions to Bitcoin's base layer, according to CryptoSlate and Bitcoin.com News. The idea would import a privacy technique long associated with dedicated privacy coins into Bitcoin's own protocol.
Shielded transactions, as used by Zcash, hide the sender, receiver, and amount of a transfer using cryptographic proofs. Bitcoin's ledger, by contrast, is fully transparent. Every transaction and wallet balance can be traced on the public blockchain by anyone with the right tools.
That transparency has long been cited as both a strength and a weakness of Bitcoin. It supports auditability and trust in the network's supply and settlement history. It also means users have limited financial privacy compared to cash or to privacy-focused coins like Zcash and Monero.
Bitcoin's community has previously approached privacy through wallet-level tools rather than protocol changes. CoinJoin-style mixing services and batching techniques have offered partial privacy without altering Bitcoin's core code. The new proposal reported by CryptoSlate and Bitcoin.com News would instead work at the base layer itself, similar to how Zcash embeds shielded pools directly into its protocol.
