Bitcoin's slide below $58,000 in early July failed to trigger the kind of aggressive dip-buying that has historically followed sharp price declines, according to on-chain data that tracks how quickly coins change hands after being dormant. The subdued response has fueled a broader debate over whether the cryptocurrency has truly established a bear-market bottom or whether further downside remains.

The HODL Waves metric, which categorizes Bitcoin's supply based on how long coins have sat idle in wallets, showed only a marginal increase in short-term activity following the July 1 drop. Coins dormant for one to seven days—a band widely used to gauge fresh buying—accounted for 1.97% of total supply on the day BTC/USD reached its lowest level since September 2024. By July 5, that share had risen to just 2.35%, a modest uptick that analysts say falls far short of the buying spikes seen in prior cycles.

On-chain analyst Willy Woo described the pattern as an anomaly, noting that earlier market bottoms typically produced rapid, herd-like accumulation from investors eager to capitalize on discounted prices. "Whoever bought the bottom did it slowly. Possibly even a single whale," he wrote in a post on X. He added that he had not found a more convincing explanation for the data, suggesting the steady accumulation may have come from a concentrated group of buyers rather than broad market participation.
