Options traders are betting that Bitcoin's wildest swings are behind it, at least for now. The gap between expectations and recent reality is striking. IBIT's implied volatility — the market's forecast for future price movement embedded in options prices — sat at 37.4% as of Tuesday. That compares with a realized volatility of 45.5% over the prior 20 trading sessions, a measure of how much the fund's price actually moved.
Koen Hoorelbeke, an investment and options strategist at Saxo Bank, put the implied volatility rank at 11.9 based on Wednesday's data, placing it near the lowest point of its 12-month range. The metric suggests options traders anticipate relatively stable conditions in the near term.
"In our view the options market appears to be pricing calmer conditions than the recent past produced," Hoorelbeke wrote in his analysis.
Implied volatility projects the magnitude of future price swings, while realized volatility is calculated from historical price changes. A wide divergence between the two can indicate that options traders believe a period of heightened turbulence is winding down.
