Crypto Fear and Greed Index Hits 74, Highest Since October Peak Before Market Rout

Sentiment in the cryptocurrency market has climbed to its highest level in about 10 months, with the Crypto Fear and Greed Index swinging from fear to greed in less than two weeks.

CoinDesk reported on Aug. 26 that Alternative's Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 74 the previous day, rebounding from 27 on Aug. 12. The index then edged down to 65 on Aug. 26.

It was the first time the index had reached 74 since Oct. 5, 2025. Five days after that peak, the market tumbled, wiping out $19 billion in leveraged positions in forced liquidations, the largest single-session total on record.

The Fear and Greed Index quantifies market sentiment on a scale of 0 to 100 using Bitcoin volatility and trading momentum, social media activity, Bitcoin's share of total crypto market capitalization and Google search volume. A reading above 50 indicates greed, while a level below 50 signals fear. The index remained in fear territory every day from late July through Aug. 19, and fell to 25 on Aug. 6, marking a period of extreme fear.
