OpenAI is testing negative targeting guidance options for its ads system with a small group of advertisers, spokesperson Taya Christianson confirmed to ADWEEK.

Details are scant for now, but OpenAI said that these are additional ways for an advertiser to share information on contexts they do not want to appear next to. The product is still in development, and OpenAI declined to comment on specific timelines.

That’s good news for some ad buyers, whose concerns with the platform include the difficulty in explaining their target audience to ChatGPT, limited controls about where they want their ads to go (or not), and little visibility into where those ads appeared, according to four execs buying ads on ChatGPT, and one AI visibility platform.
