The U.S. September Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7% year over year, above expectations of 3.6% and August’s 3.4%. Monthly inflation reached 0.6%, driven partly by rising energy prices.
The report renewed concerns that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates elevated or tighten monetary policy further.
On October 14, the $Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ.US)$ fell approximately 1.9%, while the $SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY.US)$ lost 1.1%.
Higher borrowing costs and valuation concerns weighed particularly heavily on technology and AI infrastructure stocks.
2. NVIDIA, AMD and Oracle: Why AI Stocks Are Under Pressure
The selloff extended across the AI ecosystem.
$Oracle (ORCL.US)$ declined approximately 9%, while AI cloud provider $CoreWeave (CRWV.US)$ plunged around 16%.
The concern goes beyond inflation.
AI data centers require substantial investment in GPUs, memory, electricity, and financing. Higher interest rates can make these projects more expensive, potentially affecting future orders.
