Dubbed Shunkai, the quantum computer is expected to initially operate with approximately 50 qubits, eventually scaling to 500 qubits as development of the system continues.
In its next phase, the team undertaking the Ohmori Moonshot project will focus on improving system integration, stability, and scalability. The quantum computer will be made available to external users across academia and industry to support the development of applications and advance quantum error correction research.
Professor Kenji Ohmori is leading the project at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), part of Japan’s National Institutes of Natural Sciences. Infleqtion was the only foreign quantum partner selected by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) for its Quantum Moonshot program. Moonshot Goal 6 aims to build a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer and quantum Internet by 2050.
“This milestone marks a pivotal moment for Japan’s quantum ambitions as well as Infleqtion’s role in advancing production-ready quantum platforms at scale,” said Pranav Gokhale, chief technology officer at Infleqtion.
