What Happened?

Marathon Digital (MARA) stock jumped 16% on Thursday, crossing $11, after the company announced a deal to acquire Long Ridge Energy & Power.

The acquisition significantly expands MARA’s power capacity and pushes the company deeper into high-performance computing and AI infrastructure, a shift away from relying purely on Bitcoin mining.

This move fits management’s broader strategy. Instead of just mining Bitcoin, MARA has been working to lock down large-scale power assets that can flex between crypto mining and AI workloads, whichever makes more sense at the time. The Long Ridge deal is the latest and biggest step in that direction.

The rally got an extra push from CoreWeave, whose strong Q2 results acted as a sympathy catalyst for Marathon Digital stock. CoreWeave raised its compute pricing by 25% and grew its contribution margins, pointing to surging enterprise demand for AI data center capacity.
