NAIC summer 2026: Colorado commissioner urges action toward an AI model law

Colorado’s insurance commissioner urged the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to move toward an artificial intelligence model law during the NAIC’s summer 2026 meeting, according to S&P Global. The call highlights continued regulatory attention on how insurers develop, buy and use AI systems.

The NAIC is a U.S. standard-setting organization whose members are state and territorial insurance regulators. Its model laws and model regulations can provide a common policy framework for states, though each jurisdiction decides whether and how to adopt them.

An AI-focused insurance model law could address governance, oversight and accountability questions associated with automated systems.
