Nvidia is paying $6 billion to license AI model software from startup Poolside

The chip designer will also invest $1 billion in Poolside and hire more than 100 of its engineers to work on Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron models

Nvidia $NVDA struck a deal to license AI model software from startup Poolside for $6 billion, while separately investing $1 billion in the company at a pre-money valuation of $12 billion. Poolside sent a letter to its shareholders Thursday announcing the arrangement, a copy of which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Poolside's Model Factory — the internal system the startup relied on to develop its AI models — is the technology Nvidia has licensed, according to The Next Web. The license is non-exclusive, leaving Poolside free to license the same software to other parties.

More than 100 Poolside engineers will join Nvidia and work on the company's Nemotron open-weight model project, according to the Wall Street Journal. Poolside's three founders — chief executive Eiso Kant, co-founder Jason Warner, and operations executive Margarida Garcia — will not join Nvidia and will continue working on unspecified research projects.
