Onslow County sheriff warns of scam calls claiming missed jury duty and demanding bitcoin

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving callers claiming people missed jury duty, have a warrant for their arrest, or owe fines.

Deputies said the scammers then demand payment through bitcoin, gift cards or other digital currency to “resolve” the issue.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call residents to demand payment or ask for bitcoin, gift cards or wire transfers. Deputies also said they will never threaten arrest over the phone for missing jury duty or court.

Anyone who receives a call like this is urged to hang up immediately and avoid giving out personal or financial information.
