At the Token2049 conference in Singapore on October 7, 2026, Shayne Coplan stood in front of a room full of crypto enthusiasts and essentially told them their favorite investment strategy is a losing game. The Polymarket founder and CEO compared the hunt for 100x token returns to a game of hot potato, driven by irrational exuberance rather than any underlying logic about value.
Polymarket logged $1.21 billion in prediction volume in the single week leading up to October 7, 2026. The platform earned $26 million in fees during that same seven-day stretch, and $103 million in fees over the prior 30-day period.
For context, Polymarket processed approximately $3 billion in volume during the 2024 US presidential election cycle, capturing around 85% of online election wagers.
The core of Coplan's thesis is that speculative token investments are fundamentally untethered from value. Buyers pile in hoping to sell to the next buyer at a higher price, which works until it suddenly doesn't.
Prediction markets operate on a different logic. Participants are buying probability, not momentum. If a market prices an event at 60 cents on the dollar, that implies a 60% chance of the outcome occurring. Traders who believe that probability is mispriced, either too high or too low, can take a position based on their analysis rather than their ability to time crowd psychology.
