The time required to unlock staked cryptocurrency varies dramatically across major blockchains, ranging from no waiting period at all on Cardano to nearly a month on Polkadot, a reality that is forcing ETF sponsors to hold substantial reserves of unstaked assets to meet potential redemptions.

Data queried directly from network protocols and public queue statistics on September 13, 2026, shows Ethereum withdrawals currently take approximately eight days, Solana around a day and a half, Cosmos Hub exactly 21 days, and Polkadot 28 days. Cardano imposes no lock-up whatsoever. These figures rarely appear in wallet interfaces and shift with network congestion.

The disparity stems from a fundamental design question: how long does a network need to punish validator misconduct after the fact? The mechanism, known as slashing, seizes part of a deposited balance when a validator misbehaves, such as signing two contradictory blocks. Since such behavior may only come to light days later, the lock-up period holds the pledge long enough for the network to detect and act on a breach. Chains without slashing for delegators require no waiting period at all.

Ethereum's withdrawal process involves three distinct clocks. The exit queue held precisely zero ETH on the measurement date, meaning validators could begin exiting immediately. But that is only the first step. A second mechanism called the sweep then processes all validators in turn to check for withdrawable balances. At most 16 withdrawals fit into each block, corresponding to roughly 115,200 validators per day. With 911,414 active validators, a full circuit took an estimated 7.9 days.
