The Blockchain Association (BA), the leading lobbying group for the U.S. cryptocurrency industry, announced on September 25 that CEO Summer Mersinger will step down effective October 16. Beginning October 17, Kristin Smith—the association's former CEO who currently serves as board chair—will take the helm as interim CEO.

The leadership change was announced just 10 days after the CLARITY Act, a crypto market structure bill, hit a procedural wall in the Senate. The bill was one of BA's top policy priorities in Washington, and industry observers widely view the legislative impasse as a key factor behind the leadership transition.

Mersinger resigned mid-term from her position as a commissioner at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to join BA as CEO in June 2025. She had served at the CFTC from March 2022 to May 2025, with a term that was originally set to run through April 2028. Her tenure at BA spanned approximately 16 months. She will remain with the organization as an advisor through year-end.

In its announcement, BA cited Mersinger's accomplishments during her tenure, including passage of the GENIUS Act stablecoin legislation and efforts to advance regulatory clarity at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and CFTC. The association also highlighted that it held more than 300 meetings with Congress and regulators in 2026, though it notably did not list the CLARITY Act among her achievements.
