Unpermitted Crypto Mine Condemned After 3-Million-Gallon Water Leak Closes Schools

Schools closed. Bottled water distributed to residents. A municipal water tower dropped from roughly 750,000 gallons to approximately 200,000 before anyone traced the source. This is El Reno, Oklahoma, in late August 2026 — and the culprit was a private fire-suppression line on a Bitcoin mining property that, according to city officials, had no valid permits to operate. The Stop Work Order existed. The enforcement did not.

A Stop Work Order That Nobody Enforced

Most permit violations end in paperwork. This one ended in a water crisis.

The City of El Reno issued a Stop Work Order to Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC in 2023, citing multiple fire and life safety code violations along with expired building and electrical permits. City officials say no permits were ever issued for an operating data center on the property. Athlon reportedly kept building anyway — deploying modular shipping-container units that, city officials say, complicated traditional enforcement of permit frameworks. City officials say enforcement was complicated by the modular format of the units.
