Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, expressed confidence on September 7 that Bitcoin can handle emerging technical security challenges without relying on social consensus, arguing that simple client and mining pool upgrades would be sufficient to address network-layer threats.

The comments directly counter a growing narrative in crypto circles: that artificial intelligence could pose an existential risk to Bitcoin, potentially causing its value to drop more than 50% over the next two years. Buterin's verdict on the likelihood of anyone breaking Bitcoin's core cryptographic elements, including its hashes and proof-of-work model? "Tiny."

Bitcoin's proof-of-work system has accumulated roughly 2^96 hashes over its lifetime. The sheer computational weight behind the network means that mounting a successful attack would require resources that currently border on the physically impossible.

Bitcoin has never experienced a successful 51% attack, the scenario where a single entity gains majority control of the network's mining power and can manipulate transactions.

Buterin's argument hinges on a distinction between threats that require social coordination to solve, like contentious protocol upgrades or governance disputes, and purely technical challenges that can be addressed through software updates. In Bitcoin's case, he believes the technical defenses are robust enough that the community doesn't need to engage in consensus-building exercises to stay secure.
