Bitcoin exists outside the traditional financial system, but its price does not move in complete isolation. When oil, metals and other commodities become more expensive, they affect inflation expectations, interest rates and the US dollar. Those same forces can influence how investors approach Bitcoin.

As crypto has matured into a market watched alongside more established asset classes, the relationship between Bitcoin and commodity prices has become more obvious. While a move in commodities doesn’t automatically tell traders where Bitcoin is heading next, it can indeed change the economic backdrop against which Bitcoin is being priced.

Commodity Prices Can Change the Inflation Picture

Expectations around inflation often shape expectations for Federal Reserve policy. Higher commodity prices can increase costs for businesses and consumers, particularly when the move involves something as widely used as oil. Energy feeds into transportation, manufacturing and many other parts of the economy.

Bitcoin traders therefore have a reason to look beyond crypto-specific headlines. Someone using the best online trading tools to follow currencies or Bitcoin may also be watching oil, gold and other markets for signs that the broader economic environment is changing.
