Allstate Chair, President and CEO Tom Wilson is encouraging companies to begin learning about and investing in quantum computing as businesses assess the technology’s potential applications.

Quantum computing uses principles of quantum physics to address problems beyond the capabilities of today’s leading supercomputers. Although commercially meaningful applications remain under development, companies have started increasing their investment in the technology.

“Quantum will solve problems that traditional compute takes too long to do. And that AI can’t really do,” Wilson told The Wall Street Journal. However, he said the timing of quantum computing’s development and the extent of its potential competitive advantages remain uncertain.

At Allstate, a 10-person quantum computing team is exploring possible uses for the technology, and the company is expanding the group. One area under investigation involves evaluating complex risk factors and relationships. The goal is to determine whether quantum computing could support more precise pricing that better reflects the underlying risk associated with certain insurance policies.

Wilson’s message to other business leaders is to “get on the train” by preparing for the technology before it reaches wider commercial use. He compared the current period of quantum development with companies’ earlier preparations for generative artificial intelligence.

According to Wilson, some businesses lacked the necessary talent and data infrastructure to begin using generative AI immediately as the technology gained prominence. As a result, he said companies should consider whether their existing systems and technology architecture will be ready for quantum computing when it becomes more usable.

However, Wilson distinguished quantum computing’s current state from that of AI. He said quantum technology is “nowhere close to the usability” of AI and cautioned against viewing it as an imminent successor to the technology.

Wilson said he spends about 30% of his time on technology. AI accounts for the majority of that time, while quantum computing represents a much smaller portion.

Meanwhile, enterprise spending on quantum computing has increased. According to a Boston Consulting Group report cited by The Wall Street Journal, enterprises collectively spent $300 million on quantum technology in 2025. For the first time, that total exceeded the combined quantum spending of research laboratories and governments, signaling increased commercial interest.

Other businesses, including HSBC and EY, are also exploring quantum computing, according to the Journal.

For Wilson, current preparation centers on learning about the technology and understanding how companies may need to structure their systems ahead of broader adoption.

“It will work. Will it be as effective as everybody wants? I don’t know,” Wilson said. “But if it’s going to be available, then I need to start thinking about it coming even before I know exactly when it’s going to get there.”
