Bitcoin's path to a seven-figure valuation by the end of the decade faces a stark mathematical hurdle, according to Markus Thielen, head of research at digital asset analysis firm 10x Research. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Thielen argued that the capital required to push Bitcoin to $1 million per coin by 2030 is so enormous that the target is effectively unattainable under normal market conditions.

"It's mathematically impossible," Thielen said. His assessment rests on a simple comparison: Bitcoin has attracted roughly $1 trillion in capital inflows over the past 15 years, bringing its market capitalization to approximately $1.28 trillion at the time of publication, with the price trading near $63,868, according to CoinMarketCap data. To reach $1 million per coin, Thielen estimates the asset would need an additional $15 trillion in net inflows over the next four years.

That figure is not just large in absolute terms. Thielen pointed out that $15 trillion represents about a quarter of the entire U.S. stock market's total value. Redirecting that much capital into a single digital asset within a four-year window, he argued, is a scale of reallocation that has no historical precedent.

"It takes trillions and trillions of dollars to move the price really materially higher," Thielen said. "We have seen $1 trillion US dollars of inflow to bring the market cap really to $1 trillion. To get to $1 million per Bitcoin, it's 15x from here."

The liquidity problem deepens as Bitcoin grows. Thielen emphasized that a larger market capitalization makes each successive percentage gain more expensive. The same dollar amount that once moved the price 10% in an earlier cycle now produces a much smaller effect. This dynamic, he said, is why investors should not assume Bitcoin will repeat its previous cycle recoveries on the same timeline.

Bitcoin's all-time high stands at $126,000, a level Thielen said may not reappear quickly. "Usually, it takes some time because we are at a higher market cap, and that usually takes a lot of money to push the Bitcoin price higher," he said. "So I wouldn't argue that next year we're gonna see new highs. If we go back to, let's say, $100,000, that would already be, I think, a big, big achievement."

The cryptocurrency was down 2.35% over the previous 30 days at the time of the interview, reflecting what Thielen described as a broader cooling in retail and institutional interest.

Retail psychology and the whole-coin barrier

Beyond the raw capital math, Thielen identified a psychological friction that could dampen adoption as prices climb. Many retail investors, he said, prefer to own a whole unit of an asset rather than a fraction. When Bitcoin's price reaches levels comparable to significant life purchases, some buyers may hesitate.

"People don't want to buy a tenth or a hundredth of a Bitcoin; they want to buy a whole Bitcoin," Thielen said. "You don't want to buy a fraction of a painting." He added that the concept of satoshis, the smallest divisible unit of Bitcoin, "doesn't really sound as interesting as Bitcoin."

This sentiment barrier could become more pronounced at higher valuations. Thielen described a scenario where potential buyers weigh the decision of purchasing one Bitcoin against buying a new car or working an entire year for a single coin.

Bold forecasts and media incentives

The $1 million by 2030 prediction has been publicly endorsed by several prominent industry figures, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood. Thielen argued that such forecasts are an easy way for executives to generate media attention, but they may do more harm than good for everyday investors.

"Round numbers and the higher the number, the more it's being quoted by the press," Thielen said. "These optimistic price targets tend to hurt retail investors because they sort of think, OK, if this is only halfway right, then I'm gonna make a lot of money."

Thielen contrasted these aggressive targets with his own firm's approach. 10x Research entered the year with relatively conservative projections, a strategy he said has proven prudent in hindsight. "I think nearly everybody was still very bullish and projected higher prices. We came into the year already quite conservative, and I think our conservative approach has been the right strategy," he said.

When pressed on whether Bitcoin could ever reach $1 million, Thielen did not rule it out entirely, but framed the scenario as dependent on extreme macroeconomic conditions rather than ordinary market growth. "It would require, you know, a major credit event, implosion of everything," he said. "I don't want to say never, but I do think a million is really a high number."

The debate over Bitcoin's long-term price trajectory reflects a broader tension in the digital asset market between narratives of exponential adoption and the practical constraints of capital formation. For investors, the key question is whether the next phase of growth will be driven by sustained, large-scale inflows or whether Thielen's liquidity-based critique better captures how price responds as Bitcoin's valuation continues to expand.
