Bitcoin mining stocks have surged this year as investors bet on the companies' expansion into AI data-center infrastructure.

CryptoQuant analyst JA Maartunn said Riot Platforms shares jumped 83% from January through the end of July, according to crypto news outlet CryptoPotato on Aug. 13. Over the same period, Hut 8 rose 72%, Bitfarms gained 50% and Core Scientific climbed 31%.

Maartunn said the rally is tied less to Bitcoin mining itself than to miners' efforts to supply their power capacity and data-center infrastructure to AI companies.

The competition has moved beyond hash rate to power, grid access and AI-supporting infrastructure, he added. Riot has also been expanding its AI infrastructure business, including through a long-term lease agreement for a 191-megawatt data center with an AI company.
