Coinbase Files for Equity Perpetuals with SEC

Coinbase has submitted registration documents to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to offer equity perpetuals, according to a social media post by the crypto exchange's chief policy officer on Thursday. The source for this information is Reuters.

Perpetuals, also known as perps, are derivative contracts that track underlying assets and do not expire, enabling traders to hold positions indefinitely without roll-over requirements. The product still requires approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as stated by Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad in a post on X.

Shirzad indicated that equity perps have demonstrated international demand and expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of a regulated pathway for U.S. investors. Earlier this year, Coinbase received CFTC approval alongside prediction markets platform Kalshi to offer perpetual crypto futures. Kalshi has also filed for CFTC approval to launch equity index perpetuals, which would place it in more direct competition with incumbent exchanges.

The regulatory greenlight has affected sentiment in exchange stocks during the first half of the year, which are recovering from a selloff in that period.
