MeshClans tracked a decisive pivot: blockchains captured over 90% of monthly crypto revenue from 2021 through 2023, yet that share collapsed to 25% by mid-2026.

App Layer Takes Command

Finance apps now exceed 50% in most months through perp DEXs, lending protocols and stablecoin issuance, while consumer apps add a steady slice. Private credit stands out as the clearest breakthrough, delivering efficiency gains against TradFi that continue to widen.

The same pattern played out on the internet: backbone providers dominated early, then platforms captured the surplus. HyperliquidX and Pumpfun style products already generate hundreds of millions in fees that once flowed only to validators. Crypto revenue has diversified and the next decade of compounding sits at the application layer.
