Ethereum's price increase over the last 40 hours is driven by a combination of factors rather than a single event.
Key Drivers of Ethereum's Price Movement
1. Spot ETF Flows and Institutional Demand
Sustained inflows into U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs have provided a consistent source of buy pressure. BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) alone recorded approximately $1.02 billion in inflows over nine consecutive sessions from 17 to 27 August 2026, accounting for about 72% of all ETH ETF inflows in that period.¹ Total August inflows reached around $1.85 billion, flipping 2026 net flows positive and pushing cumulative inflows above $13 billion.² This steady demand has contributed to the gradual 40-hour price climb.
2. Tight Supply, Staking, and Whale Positioning
Structural supply metrics and large-holder behaviors have amplified the impact of new demand. Exchange reserves have dropped from about 16.9 million ETH in January to around 14.9 million ETH by late August, nearing their lowest level since 2016.² This reduction in liquid supply, combined with ongoing accumulation by large entities like BitMine, has made ETH more sensitive to incremental demand.³
