The Federal Reserve’s Treasury bill schedule has stirred optimism among crypto traders, although the operations remain routine reinvestments rather than a new monetary easing program.

Under the schedule, the Fed plans about $15.6 billion in Treasury bill reinvestment purchases between September 15 and October 14. Specifically, five operations carry maximum sizes of roughly $3.891 billion, $1.946 billion, $3.892 billion, $1.946 billion, and $3.891 billion.

Combined, those purchases total approximately $15.57 billion. The first operation took place on September 17 and settled the following day, while the remaining purchases will continue through October.

Fed’s $15.6B Treasury Bill Buys Are Reinvestments, Not QE

The purchases reflect principal payments from agency securities and do not mark the return of quantitative easing. Under existing FOMC instructions, principal from agency debt, mortgage-backed securities, and commercial mortgage-backed securities is reinvested into Treasury bills.

That process replaces agency assets that are paying down and maintains the Federal Reserve’s portfolio strategy. Crucially, the New York Fed’s schedule contains no reserve management purchases.

Those separate operations can increase System Open Market Account holdings when officials judge that more reserves are needed to maintain ample banking conditions. That distinction corrects claims that the entire $15.6 billion program represents a fresh liquidity injection designed to expand reserves.
